On August 13, 2004 (FRIDAY the 13th) at approximately 9:30 PM (EST), Hurricane Charley struck the Orlando area with winds of 90 to 105 mph as recorded at Orlando International Airport (KMCO). Below are photo's of the damage at KORL. Approximately 50 aircraft were damaged/destroyed , and I was advised that only one hanger was not damaged that housed a corporate jet.
Following photo's are the Showalter ramp (east ramp), these aircraft can not be moved until insurance adjustors see them
This a/c broke free of tie downs and rolled across the tarmac and came to rest against the fence
The following photo's are of a DC-3 (N22RB). The DC-3 was tied down and had a forklift secured to the front of the a/c. When the hurricane hit, the plane lifted off the ground and dragged the forklift (green in photo) 30 feet before breaking that tie down cable. Once free, the a/c went nose up and airborne with only the tail dragging the ground. The a/c then struck an aluminum hanger that housed several a/c, and continued over that hanger until it struck a concrete hanger damaging more a/c. I followed the refurbishment of the DC-3, and only months earlier did they complete the engine overhaul and made the a/c flight worthy. The a/c was sold only 3 days prior to the hurricane striking and was to be flown out on 8-17-04 for a total refurbishment to the early airline era.
