The Teardown The teardown of C-GAPW at the Opa Locka (KOPF) Airport, just north of Miami International Airport
This picture was taken shortly after landing gear was removed The teardown started on January 31, 2002 and ended in the first weeks of May 2002
The traditional painting over of the airlines logo and registration. C-GAPW is barely visible
Looking into the flight deck
The flight deck is filled with cabin panels and loose wires. Close up of quadrant pedestal. Looking aft from the flight deck. The plane is stripped of every usable part, seats, windows, overhead storage bins, are all resold or put on sister ships. The baggage compartment is visible thru the floor
The wings after the engines have been removed, the wings are considered "clean metal" because they usually don't have paint on them and bring more money when sold for scrap MAY 18, 2002 The trip to Opa Locka to pick up the flight deck
The fuselage was chopped up by a backhoe equipped with "jaws" that reduced it to the three piles of rubble seen behind Tim, who helped me bring the flight deck home. The Delta 727 is next on the chopping block.
The flight deck awaits the forklift for the 4 hour trip to my house. Unfortunately, the break interlock system was cut off when the lower portion of the flight deck was cut off with a cutting torch. I'm now attempting to find a replacement for it.
A happy B737 owner!
Total cost for shipping: Rented 16' flatbed $47.00, tolls $10.00, wide load permit $10.00, straps $30.00. Having your own flight deck priceless. Arrival
Making sure the forklift clears the 6' fence
After nearly 1 1/2 years, things are going my way
My Dad and I watch placement of the flight deck for further tear down. You can see the drought in May 2002 took a toll on my back yard This is the last entry for this section.
